In-Person Support when Available
(Updated 7/13/2022)
In-person support during labor is available as long as facilities are allowing. (please check with your birth practitioners to understand the current policies) Prenatally, we may choose to do a combination of video and in person meetings by following what feels appropriate for each individual. It is also important to acknowledge that the offer for long distance support through video conferencing continues to available. There are varying levels of comfort and we want to support your individual needs. Mask wearing and hand sanitizing is a regular event now days.
If you are having your first pregnancy experience it is not uncommon to have lots of wonders, in general, about what birth will be like. 'Do I 'need' a Doula?' or even 'How could a Doula support me through a video screen?' may also have come up.
Let's explain some reasons for hiring a Doula in the first place, when a pandemic is not of concern.
- A Doula spends time with the birthing parent and partner during pregnancy, getting to know you, your partner, your lifestyle, your needs, your desires, your strengths, your concerns.
- A Doula brings continuity from the pregnancy into the labor experience.
- A Doula supports the partner to help them better support the birthing parent.
- A Doula's only focus is on you. They are not distracted by medical procedures, other clients, paperwork.
In a scenario of the Doula showing up through media, these things absolutely do not change. The main difference is that there is more 'responsibility' of the partner to follow through with the Doulas guidance and being able to manage the Doula screen. That may feel a little overwhelming for the partner and worth considering. On the other hand, it's possible that the guidance for the partner to support the birthing parent might just outweigh the nuances of media management? Something to think about.
We just want you to know you don't have to go it alone. Give yourself the support you deserve.
Be safe, stay well, stretch and breathe!
